Mass-loss from massive globular clusters in tidal fields

چکیده

Massive globular clusters lose stars via internal and external processes. Internal processes include mainly two-body relaxation, while interactions with the Galactic tidal field. We perform a suite of N-body simulations such massive using three different direct-summation codes, exploring orbits particle numbers. By inspecting rate at which star's energy changes as it becomes energetically unbound from cluster, we can neatly identify two populations call kicks sweeps, that escape through encounters to cluster field, respectively. find for typical halo on moderately eccentric orbit, sweeps are far more common than but total mass loss is so low these survive tens Hubble times. The codes give largely consistent results, numerical artifacts may arise in relation time step parameter Hermite integration scheme, namely value required convergent results sensitive number particles.

Mass Loss from Globular Clusters

We consider both observational and theoretical issues related to dynamical mass loss from the old globular star clusters of the Galaxy. On the observational side the evidence includes tidal tails and extratidal extensions, kinematic effects, effects on the mass function, and influences on the statistical properties of surviving objects. Even for isolated clusters, the theoretical issues are not...

Massive Globular Clusters In

We present velocity dispersion measurements of 14 globular clusters in NGC 5128 (Centarus A) obtained with the MIKE echelle spectrograph on the 6.5m Magellan Clay telescope. These clusters are among the most luminous globular clusters in NGC 5128 and have velocity dispersions comparable to the most massive clusters known in the Local Group, ranging from 10 – 30 km s−1. We describe in detail our...

Horizontal Branch Morphology and Mass Loss in Globular Clusters

The connection between mass loss on the red giant branch (RGB) and horizontal branch (HB) morphology in globular clusters (GCs) has long been acknowledged but the mechanisms governing mass loss remains poorly understood from a theoretical perspective. The present study uses synthetic HB models to demonstrate for the first time that α-enhancement and a simple relation between mass loss and metal...

Mass Loss Timescale of Star Clusters in External Tidal Field

We investigate evolution of star clusters in external tidal field by means of N body simulations. We followed seven sets of cluster models whose central concentration and strength of the tidal field are different. We found that the mass loss timescale due to escape of stars, tmloss, and its dependence on the two-body relaxation timescale, trh,i, are determined by the strength of the tidal field...

Fe b 19 99 Determining the Galactic mass distribution using tidal streams from globular clusters

We discuss how to use tidal streams from globular clusters to measure the mass distribution of the Milky Way. Recent proper motion determinations for globular clusters from plate measurements and Hipparcos astrometry provide several good candidates for Galactic mass determinations in the intermediate halo, far above the Galactic disk, including Pal 5, NGC 4147, NGC 5024 (M53) and NGC 5466; the ...
